As a business owner, it's important to know fire safety terms and systems. Knowing the top used terms will help you better communicate with your fire protection company and understand how to keep your building fully protected and up to code.
In this blog, we will highlight the top fire safety terms that every business owner should know. This will not only help you run a better, safer business, but it could also save lives and money if a fire related incident does occur.
Fire Safety Terms That You Should Know
1. NFPA
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) creates and maintains fire safety standards and codes. These codes are put in place to eliminate death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and other hazards. The NFPA also delivers information through research, training, education, outreach and advocacy.
2. Wet Pipe
Wet pipe sprinkler systems are the most commonly used sprinklers for fire protection. A wet pipe system uses your water supply to fight fires. The fire pumps and pipes are connected to the fire sprinklers so that they can easily access the water and extinguish the fire. The pipes are full of water at all times, so when the sprinkler heads are activated by heat, the water will flow immediately.
3. Dry Pipe
Dry pipe sprinkler systems are also commonly used in buildings. A dry pipe system uses a water source that's stored under pressure at a sprinkler valve. So the pipes are dry and filled with compressed air or nitrogen. Then when the sprinkler head is deployed, the air is released and it opens the valve so that water can flow out. Generally, dry pipe systems are used when a wet pipe wouldn't make sense, like if there are freezing temperatures and the building doesn't have heat.
4. Clean Agent
Clean agent systems are used to suppress fires without the use of water. A clean agent system is best used for data centers, museums or other facilities that use electronic equipment that can't get wet. The system will release gas or a combination of gasses to reduce the amount of oxygen in the room because oxygen feeds the fire and flames.
5. Backflow Preventer
Backflow preventers are used to protect the water used in your fire sprinkler system. Backflow occurs when liquid, gas or suspended solids reverse flow and contaminate clean water in cross connection systems. The backflow preventer will ensure this doesn't happen. These are extremely important because they keep you and the public safe from contaminated water.
